This is a song that Toshi has been singing for years, from a group he listened to and found much solace in when he was living in Austin, Texas. I just recently started playing and singing it, and it has also given me much solace too, especially tonight as I look towards my trip.
These are the lyrics:
So you want to live a life in vain,
To be a sinner, but to look like a saint
What will you do, when it all is through?
You'll be old and hateful and mean
I propose a magnificent plan:
be kind and generous to your fellow man
For the pain delivered is never as great
As the pain earned through borrowed hate
Depend on me (repeat 3x)
May I conclude from your manner of speech
That your mouth is large and your mind is weak
But I'll take pity on your poor lost soul
I'm not that cold
Your friends are screaming, so don't be late
To drink, and smoke, and fornicate
You'll wake up with a headache and you'll go to church
But you won't hear much and you won't learn much
Depend on me (repeat 3x)
Today I bought a new tie and I bought a new suit
But the shoes are old and so is the shirt
I got a new car, and hey my girl, she's pretty keen
I guess I'm doing pretty well now, let's drive down and see...
The boys on the corner who are selling dope
To the boys in the schoolyard and I have hope
That the parents in their offices have some idea
Of what is happening here
Depend on me (repeat 3x)
So leave me be in my easy chair
It's a crazy world, but I don't care
Take the news of the day, and put it away
In a place
Where it's safe
Depend on me
(the chords are just G, Em, C, D, then C, D for the "depend on me" part)
